Hoxton East
Hackney Council recently consulted on a new LTN for Hoxton East. Details here.
In the consultation more people supported the LTN than opposed it, which is a fantastic local show of support for safer streets. You can read our blogpost about this here.
The Council has said it is going to do some more traffic monitoring before making a final decision on the scheme so it is not too late to request changes.
The LTN will remove through-traffic from a dangerous rat-run through the estate at Stanway Street and a busy route on Falkirk Street and Crondall Street which frequently delays the 394 bus. It will also install a filter outside of the Lion and Lamb pub on Fanshaw Street and introduce a new School Street on Hoxton Street outside St Monica’s Catholic Primary School. These measures are big improvements for the area.
However, the proposed LTN leaves open many through-routes through the area between Kingsland Road and New North Road, which is very disappointing. It also fails to significantly reduce traffic on Cycleway 1 at Whitmore Road which is a major cycle route. Cycleway 1 already has flows of traffic too high for safe inclusive cycling and it is not clear this proposal will improve the situation (and may potentially make it worse).
The following plan shows the through-routes we believe have been left open by the scheme:

Low Traffic Hoxton SUPPORTS the scheme as it will remove some traffic and filter some key routes however we are very concerned it is not extensive enough to transform conditions across the area. This risks failing to meet the scheme’s aims and potentially causing displaced traffic to other minor roads in Hoxton instead of fully encouraging mode shift away from driving.
We urge residents to SUPPORT the scheme but make clear to Councillors it should be redesigned to prevent ALL minor road through-routes for motor traffic between Kingsland Road and New North Road. We suggest requesting an additional filter as detail below. Details of local Councillors and how to contact them are in our blogpost.
The LTN can be fixed with a single additional filter on Hoxton Street between Purcell Street and Stanway Street. This would prevent Hoxton Street from being a through-road and cut off all the major through-routes. This would retain access to the northern part of Hoxton Street from the A10 and could also provide exemption to traders if required.
