Hoxton West

The Hoxton West LTN was introduced in August 2020 and made permanent in January 2022. The scheme includes:
  • bus gate on Shepherdess Walk
  • filter on Nile Street
  • filter on Micawber Street
  • filter on Ebenezer Street

The scheme removed through-traffic from a formerly busy main road (the B144) and protected residents from harms in a densely populated area. The area has very low car ownership with around ¾ of households living without cars. It also suffers significant issues of deprivation and contains a big proportion of social housing meaning the removal of traffic here has been an important issue of basic social justice.

How's it gone?

The scheme has made the streets of Hoxton West much quieter and more pleasant and seen a significant increase in cycling on busy active travel routes through the area including Shepherdess Walk and Eagle Wharf Road. Traffic monitoring evidence suggests no additional traffic resulted on the surrounding boundary roads. Air quality across the area has improved significantly since the LTN.
Here's how the council reported news of the LTN being made permanent:

The next stage for Hoxton should be to create an additional LTN for Hoxton East covering the areas around Whitmore Road, Pitfield Street and Hoxton Street.

Hoxton East LTN

We understand Hackney will soon release new plans for a Hoxton East LTN.
We believe a Hoxton East LTN should incorporate Hoxton Street, and deal with the
traffic chaos that is often seen on Crondall Street and Falkirk Street.

It should ensure that Hoxton Street is improved as a shopping street and key local centre. It
should close ratruns on Stanway Street and Hare Walk. Parking could be removed from Hoxton Square, allowing it to become a fully pedestrianised area, and the remaining through motor traffic on Pitfield Street removed to prioritise cycling on CS1, the major designated cycling route in Hackney.

Like Hoxton West, Hoxton East is an area with high population density, very low car ownership and a large amount of social housing and so it is imperative for basic social justice that the harms from motor traffic are reduced here.

News and stories from Hoxton West LTN

Transforming the streets

Picture
Sturt Street ANPR Enforced Filter.
Unfortunately the LTN filter and ANPR camera at Sturt Street was vandalised more than 30 times leading the Council to remove the camera and compliance rates to fall.

Following a campaign by Low Traffic Hackney Members in Hoxton, the filter was upgraded in 2025 with a fire gate and bollards to stop a problem of vehicles driving over the pavement and pedestrian crossing. So far compliance seems much improved.

Enjoying the space

Picture
Filters have opened up spaces for people use and enjoy. Reducing motor traffic noise can lower stress while travelling along, or living on these streets.

Accessing the park

Reducing motor traffic makes it easier for children to access the Shepherdess Walk Park.
