The results of the consultation for Hoxton ‘Liveable Neighbourhood’ (LTN) are in, and it is a resounding ‘YES!’ from the community for the proposed scheme. You can view the consultation report here: https://consultation.hackney.gov.uk/streetscene/connecting-hoxton-liveable-neighbourhoods/user_uploads/connecting-hoxton-liveable-neighbourhood-consultation-report-2025.pdf The scheme involves:
All elements of the scheme gained majority support, with many people asking for additional filters to make it more comprehensive and effective. Support was particularly strong amongst younger people and those who do not use cars, with strong majority support from users of all forms of transport except those who use cars, taxis and motorcycles as their main mode. Do LTN consultations reach a representative sample of the community? As is so often the case with these consultations, it was disproportionately completed by people who use a car, with 43% of respondents listing car as their main mode of transport by comparison to a household car ownership rate of around 25% in this area. Car users disproportionately opposed the scheme (74% of car users opposed the bus gate whereas 66% of non car users supported it). The sample was also heavily weighted to older demographics, with 3 times more people over 65 responding than their corresponding proportion of the actual population, and more than twice the number of people aged 55-64 than a representative sample would have had. Sadly only 3% of respondents were under 24 years old which is a real deficiency as 29% of the population here is under 24 and younger people are often most at risk from unsafe streets. The area has several schools including secondary schools and a College but children and young people were not engaged. The results show younger people are significantly more likely to support traffic reduction measures. Despite the fact the consultation reached a disproportionately hostile section of the community, it still achieved majority support, which is a fantastic insight and a resounding show of support for safer streets in Hoxton. The Council say they now want to do (even more) traffic monitoring before implementing the scheme so we have no realistic timescale as yet. We now urge the Council to expand the scheme as we suggested on our Hoxton East LTN page and to implement it as quickly as possible. Show your support!
